In their very first ever competitive game, Crawley and Brighton Gaels made the trip to Oxford to play Bristol side Western Gaels. In what would be the first game of the Glo-Herts league.
Playing with more experience and a slight breeze advantage Western Gaels got off to a good start registering a few early scores on the board and taking advantage of the pre-games nervousness shown by the newcomers.
After a shaky start, Crawley & Brighton Gaels settled into the game and took the game to the Bristol team. With some excellent mid field work from Aoife Gahan and Sarah McCarthy they soon got the ball to the dangerous forward line. Samantha Monaghan took some wonderful scores to settle the nerves and keep Western Gaels pinned in their own half. Crawley and Brighton Gaels kept the pressure on and pushed up on their opponents kick outs. Edel Marshall taking advantage and scoring some beautiful points.
The C&B Gaels Defence was tested on numerous occasions by the Western Gaels pacy full forward line. However, Carol Doherty and Sian Crewe got the all-important tackle when called upon. After some great fielding by Samantha Monaghan the ball was worked through the hands by Edel Marshall and Aoife McLoughlin. The space opened for the hardworking Tipperary star Aoife Gahan who rattled the ball in the back of the net for the game’s first goal.
Crawley and Brighton kept the pressure on and McLoughlin added another score. However, breaking from the defence at pace on the counter attack the Crawley and Brighton team where left exposed at the back and only a great safe form Sarah Brosnan kept Western Gales at bay. Crawley and Brighton didn’t learn from their mistakes and Western Gaels scored a great goal just before half time. To leave 5 points between the teams.
Feeling their first win was in their sights Crawley and Brighton started the second half with more determination. Elaine Carroll wining the high ball in the back line and setting up another C&B attack. Monaghan the former Meath star really moved through the gears and had more space to show her skill as Western Gaels flooded bodies into attack. Monaghan kicked some beautiful long range points and was the starting block for all of Crawley and Brighton’s attacks. She scored a great goal as she took advantage of the space in the Western Gaels backline.
The C&B Gaels forward line really took advantage of this space and moved the ball through their hands to set up the scores with Edel Marshall often providing the final product. The sharpshooter scored an impressive 5 points in her first outing the last of which was a great team move finished off by the West Meath native. As the game got to the latter stages Crawley & Brighton defence really stood firm with Elaine Carroll and Carol Doherty both breaking up the play. Sarah McCarthy helped her defence out by dropping back while her mid field counterpart bombed forward.
As both teams became more tired due to the soaring heat, more space became available as wingback Sian Crewe scored maybe the point of the game, as she ran forward onto a through ball by Monaghan and slotted straight over the black spot. Aine Curran almost added a 3rd goal but was unlucky when her shot came off the post. She kept battling though and almost scored her first point towards the end of the game.
Referee Frank Dillion blew his whistle to end a fantastic game and give Crawley & Brighton Gaels their first ever competitive win and get the first points on the board for the league campaign.
