All roads led to St Albans Irish Club last Saturday as they hosted the Inaugural Ó’hAnnáin cup. 6 GloHerts teams took part from across 5 GloHerts clubs, the teams were broken down into 2 groups of 3 to play in a round robin format.

Group stage games began at 11:00, with St Colmcilles St Albans & Claddaghs Gaels Black working hard to get their first wins of the day. Next up saw wins for Glen Rovers & Eire Og with only 1 group game left to gain the coveted top spot in order to get a bye to the Semi-Final stages. Again St Colmcilles & Claddaghs Gaels Black took the wins with both teams securing first place in the group stage.

The remaining 4 teams were paired in Quarter-Final fixtures which saw Eire Og and St Jude’s proving too strong for their competition and progressing to the Semi-Finals.

St Jude’s moved on to meet St Colmcilles. Some great plays through the middle allowed the home side to get scores on the board early in the game and eventually they proved too strong for the latest GloHerts addition. The other Semi-Final saw Eire Og face Claddaghs Gaels Black in what was a fantastic battle – Oxford came out on top and secured their place against St Colmcilles in the Final.

With both teams feeling the fatigue of the day, the Final battle was always going to be close. Eire Og burst out of the gates and gained a comfortable 5 point lead at the half way point. St Colmcilles had to dig deep in order to match Eire Ogs fitness, but managed to pull back the score line to make the game again unpredictable. St Colmcilles led by a point in the final minute of the game, and with Eire Og aware of the deficit and time remaining, it took everything Colmcilles had to keep them at bay. The Oxford side were unlucky in their attempts up the pitch and with the clock against them, the final whistle was blown with St Colmcilles leading by just one point to win the game and be presented with the Inaugural Ó’hAnnáin Cup.
