St Judes face Eire Og in their first GloHerts challenge!

Article by St Judes Chairperson: Kieran Doyle

On Saturday 2nd March St Jude’s men and the newly formed women’s team both played their first challenge match of 2019 at The Oakmedians rugby club Bournemouth, against strong travelling Eire Og sides.

The men’s game was played 1st and despite the wind against them, Eire Og were ahead at half time due to some strong running and great teamwork play. In the second half St Jude’s found their feet a little more and with some impressive scores from both teams the result came down to the wire with Jude’s just pipping it at the end. Although it was the 1st game of the season for Jude’s, and Eire Ogs 2nd game, the standard at times was very high, which may be expected between a clash of the Gloucestershire & Hertfordshire county champions 2018.

As the wind picked up the lads grabbed a pint and went to cheer on their respective women’s teams. Both teams played with real tenacity and enthusiasm despite the weather, putting all their hard training into use. With half the St Jude’s team new to the sport and/or making their Jude’s debut, they did a great job pulling together and giving everyone the chance to play. With some excellent scores and aggressive tackles, the first half left both teams rising to the competition. Eire Og took control of the game in the second half, with some good teamwork and well placed goals, giving the brand new St Jude’s team the challenge and experience they needed to get the season off to a fighting start.

There was a celebratory mood in the Jude’s camp after the games as we celebrated our newly formed affiliation with GloHerts LGFA and are very proud to become the 8th team in this league. After food in the rugby club, both teams went to the Westbourne pub for some well earned music and craic! St Jude’s would like to thank Eire Og for travelling down and making it such a fantastic day for everyone and we look forward to returning the favour later in the year in Oxford.
